Sharing ACCESS Data
ACCESS-NRI has a number of options to support data sharing among the ACCESS community at NCI, organised into three main areas:
These storage options are suitable for both ACCESS model output data and other datasets, as long as the data is of value to the ACCESS community. They are funded by ACCESS-NRI and support is allocated based on the dataset’s relevance to the ACCESS community. ACCESS-NRI helps ensure datasets follow the FAIR and CARE principles, especially for the Datapool and Curated storage options.
Regular reviews of the Datapool and Curated datasets are performed to ensure datasets demonstrate ongoing value for the ACCESS community. As usage across these storage options increases and a better understanding of community needs and interests is developed, recommendations for changes, including retirement or transition of datasets to other options, will be overseen by the ACCESS-NRI Scientific Advisory Committee.
Which storage option should I choose?
The following table gives guidelines for the different storage options:
| Working Group | Datapool | Curated Datasets | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Timeframe Guideline | <1 year | 1-2 years | >2 years |
| Data State | Any | Stable | Finalised |
| Sharing Scope | Working group | Gadi | Global |
| Managed by | Working group | ACCESS-NRI | ACCESS-NRI & NCI |
| Metadata Overhead | Minimal | Small | Medium |
| ACCESS Catalogue | ✗ | ✓ | ✓ |
| NCI Catalogue | ✗ | ✗ | ✓ |
| DOI | ✗ | ✗ | ✓ |
| Public Access | ✗ | ✗ | ✓ |
Working Group Storage
Each of the ACCESS Community Working Groups has a storage allocation to support the group in their research efforts. For more information, refer to joining ACCESS working groups.
Working group storage is ideal for data that is under active development or only needs to be shared within the working group.
Each working group's storage is managed by the working group members.
ACCESS Community Datapool
ACCESS-NRI maintains the ACCESS Community Datapool on Gadi under the project av17.
The Datapool supports datasets that are of value to be shared with the community
but may not be considered ready or appropriate for publication as a Curated Dataset.
Datapool storage is ideal for stable data that needs to be shared widely amongst the ACCESS community, but does not require the additional stability and functionality available to a Curated Dataset.
The Datapool is managed by the ACCESS-NRI Data team.
ACCESS-NRI Curated Datasets
ACCESS-NRI also supports carefully curated datasets, which can be assigned DOIs, made publicly available via NCI's THREDDS service, and are typically published in NCI's data catalogue. These datasets are referred to as ACCESS-NRI Curated Datasets. They are prepared in collaboration with NCI's data team and are more tightly controlled and documented than Datapool datasets in order to ensure they remain accessible, trustworthy, and (re)usable. ACCESS-NRI supports both ACCESS and non-ACCESS datasets as Curated datasets, for example the ACCESS COSIMA Model Output Collection, and the non-ACCESS Replicated Datasets for Climate Model Evaluation.
Curated Datasets are ideal for finalised data that has been involved in academic publications, needs a DOI, or needs to be shared with non-NCI users.
The ACCESS-NRI Curated Datasets are managed collaboratively by the ACCESS-NRI and NCI data teams.
How to Request Support
To request assistance with data storage from ACCESS-NRI please submit your request to a relevant working group or send an email to ACCESS-NRI's data team at data.access.nri@anu.edu.au.
When submitting a data request please include as much of the following information as possible:
- Brief description of the data (or link to catalogue record)
- Source location (where the data is currently stored)
- Licence (if known)
- Approximate storage volume required
- Estimate of the period of time the storage is required for
- Reason for being centrally managed, such as:
- widely used by the community (name user groups/organisations)
- difficult for individuals to access, manage and/or store
- supports ACCESS-NRI model development
- required for research publication.
- Person who will have ongoing responsibility for the data at NCI
For additional information on the processes and conditions for Datapool and Curated Dataset support please refer to ACCESS-NRI Merit Allocations for Reference Datasets.
